Fresh from the farm

Last year, Dayven and I decided to really clean up our act in the eating department. Not that we were ever bad eaters (remember - this is the guy that thinks fruit is dessert), but we were really tired of all the chemicals and preservatives in food. Our feelings are...if we can't pronounce it, we don't want to eat it. We decided organic was the route for us and began buying a lot more of our groceries at Wild Oats. We heard about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) from a friend and decided to give it a try. It works like this - you basically buy into shares of a farm and then the farm owners give you part of their crops each week. All the food is organic and it is delicious! You really can taste the difference. Our food comes from Delvin Farms, and the owners Cindy and Hank drive the food in every week on their truck and we pick it up at one of several locations around town. The crops are harvested on Wednesday morning and you get to pick them up on Wednesday afternoon so they really couldn't be more fresh. You never know what you're going to get - it's just whatever is ready to be harvested that week. We love it because we always get to try something new and it's fun to see what is in our box each week.

You can also do free range chickens and natural, free pasture grazing meat where the animals are allowed to roam about as they wish, and are free of artificial impurities such as steroids, growth hormones and antibiotics. You can even go to the farm to visit your animal, although this would make me feel even more guilty about eating them, especially the pigs. If I didn't like bacon so much, I'd stop eating those guys all together. In the end, the meat share ends up being such a large amount, you either need a large family or a large deep freezer (probably both). For now, we'll continue buying our overpriced organic meat at Wild Oats. Now you know what we're having for dinner the next few nights....
