Dear Keen,

My husband loves his leather Newports. He wears them as often as the weather permits, which is not nearly as often as he'd like considering we live in Northern Alberta (unless you dig the socks and sandals look). He says they are the most comfortable shoes and he sings their praises every time he slips his toes in them. We just have one complaint...they stink. Normally, my husband is not a stinky person. In fact, he is very clean and often showers twice a day. His feet never stink (something he prides himself on), unless of course he's wearing his Keens, in which case, they're hummin'.
I have been privately polling fellow Keen wearers and have found the reactions to be mixed. Many nod their head in agreement, hoping for a solution as well, while others wrinkle their nose and give me a perplexed look (maybe they're just embarrassed to admit they suffer from foot funk too).
So, what's the deal? Any suggestions you have, other than setting them on fire, will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Stinky in Suburbia

(See below response from Keen. Holy cow, who knew it would so much work to keep your shoes funk-free!)
Dear Stinky,
Thank you for supporting KEEN.
Like any shoe, there may be cases where the foot bed or upper material gets a bit funky with use. We have a few solutions, however. Your sandals are machine washable – just use cold water, gentle cycle and mild detergent.
Be sure to AIR DRY only; never use heat of any kind. (the sandals will shrink or possibly melt in the dryer or if placed near a heat source). Another option is hand-washing in the sink with a soft brush and Nik Wax BASE WASH. We've had good success with this in eliminating odor.
Nik Wax BASE Wash fails to work, you might try Greased Lightning multipurpose cleaner and degreaser. It comes in a spray bottle. Saturate the webbing upper and let it sit for about 1 hr, then washed in the machine with the Base wash or other detergent. Let air dry only, no heat. Direct sunlight may also be too much heat, depending on where you live and the season. This should clear up the issue for several weeks.
Once the sandals are clean and dry, rub Tea Tree essential oil into the upper lining and foot bed. Essential Tea Tree Oil is a non-allergenic natural antiseptic. Another good product is Paxton’s Sandal Saver. You may also try Odor Eaters Powder applied directly to the inside of the shoes after wearing them. This powder has odor-absorbing properties; such odor often originates from the sweat in the SBR (neoprene-like) lining of the sandal. Paxton’s Sandal Saver is a great, all natural product as well.
If none of the above options work, there may be an issue with the antimicrobial agent applied to the shoe when they were made. The other cause may be a reaction between the user's sweat/pH and the waterproofing treatment on the upper part of the shoe. Although this is rare, it has been known to occur. If you’ve tried everything and think this is the case with shoes less than a year old and you have a US only physical shipping address, contact us via email at info@keenfootwear.com for further warranty instructions.
Thank you for contacting us here at KEEN.
Best Regards,
