Are we there yet?

I have spent the last day and a half packing up the family truckster for our journey north. We're headed to Peoria for a long weekend for my cousin's wedding. You would not believe all the stuff associated with this trip. Thank goodness our car is big. If one were to look in the back, one would assume we're going to be gone for two weeks, but no, just 3 days. How much stuff does one little guy need anyway?

Travel monitor? check.
Multiple outfits for 2-3 changes per day? check.
Baby Einstein DVDS, jiggling, buzzing, blinking, whooping toys to entertain munchkin for 7 hour car ride? check.
Assortment of medical supplies and just-in-case ointments? check.
Noise machine that makes sounds like ocean waves crashing on the beach? check.

What happened to the simpler days when we were kids and no one had anything. Ok, I don't actually remember these days, but my mom told me about them. They had one tiny umbrella stroller that they used all the time, for every occasion. No jog strollers, convertible prams, travel systems or double strollers. They had one contraption that served as a bathtub, carrier and car seat. Sounds safe, right? Well, they drank and smoked while pregnant back then too so bouncing around the car in your bathtub was really no big deal. Those were the days before video games and DVD players in cars. People actually read in the car to entertain themselves. They didn't have giant SUVs and mini-vans where people could spread out. They had station wagons and they packed 'em in. God help you if you had to be the one to ride in the way back, facing backward (with the luggage), hoping you wouldn't barf at any moment. Remember the Brady Bunch? They took their station wagon on vacation with 2 adults, 6 kids and Alice, their housekeeper. Things were definitely different back then and life was much less complicated. We'll see if all the technology and "modern conveniences" make our trip any easier. Stay tuned...
