Fun at the Aviary!

We took the kids to check out the National Aviary, a tribute to all things feathered. It was the perfect indoor activity to get out us of the house on a snowy day.  We saw baby Penguins, Macaws, Parrots, Bats, Flamingos, Egrets and even Pelicans! The kids got a kick out of spotting the birds that we also see in Florida. "Just like Nana and Poppy's house!" they exclaimed.

We watched the "Penguin Parade", which turned out to be three lonely penguins waddling down the hall. A little anti-climatic, but still cute to see. The highlight was feeding the Lorrikeets. They give you a cup of sugary water and set you loose in their cage. They hop on your arm and scurry down to drink from the cup. It's a little freaky if you're afraid of birds (Please, you're not??) but they're friendly and really beautiful. Hadley thought it was so cool. Tate couldn't hold still enough for them to land on him and Wyatt was terrified.

Wyatt liked the Rhinoceros Hornbill. He kept insisting it was a Snipe, like the bird from UP, but I think it just has similar coloring. It was pretty cool either way. After a while, the two of them started wrestling and screeching like crazy. It was probably the wildest thing I've ever seen two birds do.

Checking out the penguins underwater from the observation cave.
No one, and I mean no one, wanted their picture with me.
We don't know what this was, but the kids had fun following it.
The Rhinoceros Hornbill
Apparently it wasn't scared of the hat.
Tate thinks they're hilarious.
The Penguin Parade. That's all folks!
