Scenes from the weekend...

The gorgeous weather continued through the weekend and we didn't waste a bit of it. We had a nice three day weekend, with Dayven off on Monday for "Heritage Day", a provincial holiday and we played all weekend.

We took a trip to Fort Edmonton Park, something we've been meaning to do since we moved here, but it always slips by us. It's only open in the summer so we didn't want to miss it this year. It's a great park in Edmonton, right along the river valley, chronicling life in Alberta through the years. It starts with a ride into the park on an old restored steam train and takes you to the Fort, where was a trading post back in 1846. They have streets representing life in different eras - 1885, 1905 and 1920. It was really authentic with tons of staff all dressed in costumes and talking in an old fashioned manner. There were horse drawn carriages, old cars and people baking bread in cast iron skillets over hot coals. I felt like we were in a movie set! The 1920's section had a carnival with a ferris wheel, games and even a carousel, which we rode several times, of course!
Riding the steam train...

We later noticed the sign that read "Please don't touch the car." oops!
A 1920's "Midway" carnival!
Wyatt opted for the "safe" ride in the chariot...
Around and around, the smile never left her face!

There were a few misses... Dayven resisted the temptation to step in and help.
She insists on doing everything her brother does.

They actually did pretty good at the fishing game. Hadley hooked the first one. Wyatt hooked one with a gold star, meaning he could pick any prize he wanted. Of all the choices, he ended up picking a giant pencil. We tried to talk him out of it, but his mind was made up. He drew a picture on the ceiling of the car on the way home. I panicked when I saw it, but it came out - thank goodness for wet wipes!
Too much fun! She snoozed on the way home...
On Monday, Hadley's birthday (more on that later), we rode the High Level Bridge Streetcar from downtown Edmonton into Old Strathcona to have lunch and walk around. The streetcar we rode was a fully restored original streetcar from 1912 that took passengers up and down Jasper Avenue back in the day. Now it rides the rail across the North Saskatchewan River, making it the highest river crossing of a streetcar in the world. It stops near the Farmer's Market in Old Strathcona, then makes it's way back. It's driven by volunteers and they were quite knowledgeable, telling us all about the history of the area. The kids thought it was pretty cool to look out the window as we were crossing the river.

Waiting patiently for the streetcar to arrive...
