Fresh from the farm...

We've been enjoying a weekly farm share of fresh, local vegetables. This is something we did when we lived in Nashville and really enjoyed it so we were pleased to find it here too. Each week we pick up our bag of goodies, not knowing what it will hold. We've had zucchini, cucumber, cabbage, lettuce, green beans, onions, kale, cauliflower, pattypan squash, swiss chard, garlic, tomato basil soup and honey puffed spelt.

It's a coop made up of 10 different farms, all organic. We just do a veggie share, but they offer cheese, eggs and meat too. Almost all of the farmers are Amish and use horses to pull their machinery. They also have to think of creative ways to keep the food cold since they don't have electricity. They harvest ice in the winter time to keep the food cold all summer long. They wait until their pond is frozen, then cut blocks of ice with a gas powered circular saw and store it in their ice house. It's quite interesting and you can read about it here.

Each week along with our food, there's also a letter from one of the farmers, with updates on their crops and happenings around the farm. This week's letter talked about their 200 ewe sheep that graze the field and their family of 7 kids!! Can you imagine? I'm sure they're all working hard to harvest these veggies.

There's talk of a "cabbalanche" so I guess a lot more cabbage will be coming our way. We just did cabbage rolls and we're having steamed cabbage with our chicken tonight. Guess we'll have to get creative!
